ExxonMobil supports a wide range of programs that foster scientific research on important environmental issues, encourage informed public discussion of scientifically sound environmental policy alternatives, and study and preserve endangered species and habitats.

Grants go primarily to organizations that are national in scope. Priorities are studying and conserving endangered species and habitats, fostering scientific research on important environmental issues, and encouraging informed public discussion of scientifically sound environmental policy alternatives. At the local level, contributions are limited to geographic areas where ExxonMobil has significant facilities or large concentrations of employees. Grants at the local level include nature preservation and environmental education activities.

Conservation and Wildlife Habitat (Biodiversity) Protection

Bird Habitat Protection
ExxonMobil Pipeline Company joined with regulatory agencies to increase habitat for protected coastal birds near the busy Houston Ship Channel in Texas.

Climate Research with Stanford University
In 2002 ExxonMobil announced an investment of $100 million in Stanford University's groundbreaking Global Climate and Energy Project (C-CEP). This 10-year project, with total anticipated investments of $225 million, is cosponsored by a prominent group of global companies in addition to ExxonMobil, including GE, Toyota, and Schlumberger.

Progressing Toward Cleaner Air in Houston
Air emissions are most effectively managed at the point of discharge, such as at a refinery or chemical plant. ExxonMobil engineers and scientists work closely with universities and independent laboratories to better understand the impact of industrial emissions on regional air pollution.

In the United States, funding is directed at improving student learning in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (the STEM areas) and at the pre-college level and in higher education.  Funding in education also focuses on outreach to improve the career opportunities for women and minorities, particularly in the STEM areas.

The Face of Education
Dictionary and textbook aid Azerbaijan´s educational reform. An Azerbaijani-English dictionary that represents more than 25 years of research and the first elementary school textbook to teach reading in the Azerbaijani-Latin alphabet are now printed and in circulation. The company worked with Azeri businesses through the relief agency, Care International, to develop and print these books.

A key component of this support is the ExxonMobil Foundation's Educational Matching Gifts Program in which it matches contributions to colleges and universities from employees, retirees, surviving spouses and directors on a three-for-one basis.

Learning about Whales
A small Western Gray Whale population inhabits the area off the northeast coast of Sakhalin Island in Russia during the summer and fall months. Since 1997, the Sakhalin-1 Consortium has spent about $4 million on research programs to mitigate any operational impact on the whales. This research involves prominent Russian and Western whale scientists and has expanded the knowledge base of the species.

Chad – Cameroon: The Largest Public Consultation in Africa
During the course of project planning for Chad oil production and the pipeline to Cameroon, there was extensive environmental planning and public consultation. This included over 900 public consultation meetings in more than 300 villages in the oil field area and pipeline route.

Since 2000, ExxonMobil has worked vigorously to support organizations that combat malaria, donating a total of $40 million to assist health organizations and programs in saving many lives in Africa. COM-EM-2

Preventing HIV/AIDS in Africa
In an effort to reduce the spread of AIDS in Africa, the company is working with local communities to strengthen HIV education and prevention programs. ExxonMobil joined in a public-private partnership in Angola that supports a variety of community-focused HIV/AIDS education and prevention strategies. In Chad and Cameroon, programs to prevent and mitigate the effects of HIV/AIDS are part of our World Bank-approved environmental management plan.

Good Works in Africa
Working with the World Bank, ExxonMobil and its partners are investing $3.5 billion to produce oil in Chad and move it by pipeline to the west coast of Cameroon for export. Local employment is currently 9,500 people, 85 percent of whom are Chadian or Cameroonian. The project will provide billions in royalties and taxes. Of this income paid to governments, 85 percent will be used for social programs to help local citizens.
