Technology Development and Clean Fuel/Vehicle Partnerships

Continued advances in technology are needed to meet the growing demand for clean, affordable energy. Sustainably meeting this demand requires a shared responsibility and commitment by the public and private sectors to ensure that our environment remains clean and healthy for this and future generations. Partnerships among various industry sectors, government agencies, academic institutions and conservation groups are developing further improvements and new technologies that can enable sustainable progress. Oil and gas companies have formed cooperative partnerships with the automotive sector to reduce the impact of hydrocarbon fuels on air quality and to develop cleaner, more efficient fuel/vehicle systems. Fuel cell technology has the potential to improve motor fuel efficiency while reducing emissions. As examples of inter-industry collaboration, Chevron, ExxonMobil, Shell and BP formed the California Fuel Cell Partnership with eight auto manufacturer’s to explore pathways for commercializing fuel-cell vehicles and demonstrating these vehicles in everyday driving conditions, including fuelling options and other infrastructure needs. Petro-Canada, Ballard Power Systems and Methanex Corporation announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding to work together to prepare for the establishment of a commercially viable fuel distribution network to meet the expected market demand for fuel cell vehicles. Shell is part of a consortium including the automotive group DaimlerChrysler and Norsk Hydro to enable Iceland to become the first country in the world to replace traditional fossil fuels with hydrogen.


Supporting the Prodeem Solar Project in Brazil
A partnership, involving BP Solar and the Brazilian Government’s PRODEEM programme, is helping to bring energy to those who need it most, and is also exploring ways in which clean development mechanisms can encourage investment in cleaner energy solutions, thereby stimulating economic and social development in some of the poorest areas of the world without causing significant harm to the environment.

This partnership provides a structure and process for dialogue on hydrogen research, with a focus on pre-competitive, high-risk research that addresses technology breakthroughs needed to realize the National Hydrogen Energy Roadmap.

Partnership for Cleaner Fuels
In June 1999, Petro-Canada, Ballard Power Systems and Methanex Corporation announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding to work together to prepare for the establishment of a commercially viable fuel distribution network to meet the expected market demand for fuel cell vehicles. Ballard Power's proton exchange membrane fuel cell converts energy from a fuel source into electricity, without combustion.

Cleaner Fuels
In January 2002, Shell launched a new semi-synthetic diesel fuel – Shell Pura – in Thailand. Shell Pura is the first diesel formulated to take advantage of the ultra-clean properties of a liquid fuel made from natural gas using the Shell Middle Distillate Synthesis (SMDS) process.
