Safety and Fire Protection Standards

A major objective of API is to promote safe, healthful, efficient and environmentally sound practices through development and maintenance of technical standards and recommended practices. As part of this objective, API also supports the principles of fire prevention as elements for personnel and property protection in the petroleum industry. Prevention programs provide the most effective means of ensuring personnel safety. API provides a forum for its members to share information and develop industry standards to advance safety and loss prevention programs. Currently, API maintains about 30 safety and fire protection standards and recommended practices. Click below to view/download API's Safety and Fire Protection Publications.

Many of the standards, recommended practices and guidance documents developed and maintained represent additional steps beyond prevention. They are designed to improve overall safety and protect personnel and property in those infrequent situations where fires occur.

These documents cover issues ranging from managing process hazards at petroleum refineries to fire-fighting techniques for petroleum storage tank fires.  Other areas include safe welding and cutting practices in refineries, gas plants and petrochemical plants; overfill protection for petroleum storage tanks; and safe operations of alkylation units at refineries.

Generally, API standards are reviewed and revised, reaffirmed, or withdrawn at least every five years. API publications may be used by anyone desiring to do so. However, information concerning safety and health risks and proper precautions with respect to particular materials and conditions should be obtained from the employer, the manufacturer or supplier of that material, or the material safety data sheet.

For a complete list of API's standards and recommended practices, go to API's Standards site. To purchase these standards, contact IHS at 1-800-854-7179 or visit www.global.ihs.com.
