API statement on Senate Finance Committee hearing

WASHINGTON, November 10, 2009 - The American Petroleum Institute issued the following statement today from President Jack Gerard on the Senate Finance Committee hearing:

"America needs all the fuels it can get and we will need the men and women with the skill and talent needed to produce them. Choosing between jobs in the traditional energy sectors like the oil and natural gas industry and new green jobs is a false and dangerous choice. The oil and natural gas industry, which supports 9.2 million American jobs, already is creating new green jobs through its investments in zero- and low-carbon technologies. Between 2000 and 2008, the industry has invested $58 billion in these technologies, more than the federal government and more than all other industries combined. With the unemployment rate rising to 10.2 percent, now is not the time for policymakers to pursue economic policies that kill jobs."
